Are You An Emotional Eater?

How do you deal with the ups and downs of life? Do you turn to food when you're feeling low? Take our quiz to find out if you are an emotional eater.

  1. After a really bad day at work you are feeling frustrated and powerless about certain situations that you constantly have to deal with. What do you do?

    Pour yourself a drink.
Talk to someone close to you who is objective and supportive.
On the way home from work, stop at your favorite fast-food joint and indulge.

  2. You’ve had an argument with one of your closest friends. You can't believe that he or she is being so unreasonable. You feel incredibly angry. What do you do?

Anything to distract yourself from the problem – such as work, read, snack, tidy the house.
Take a long walk or go for a run. You need to burn off some steam.
Raid the fridge. You'll feel calmer after you've had something to eat.

  3. It's Saturday night. Your partner is out of town for the weekend and your kids are having a sleepover at a friend's house. You think you'll be lonely without them. What are you going to do?

You can't tolerate being alone.  To you alone and lonely are synonymous, so you call anyone who will talk to you.
Enjoy the time on your own to indulge in your favorite hobby or activity.
Stock up on ice cream and snacks for a night in on the couch.

  4. You've just eaten second helpings of cake and ice cream. How do you feel about this stint of overeating?

You try not to think about it.
You know you've over-indulged. You decide to get back to your healthy eating plan tomorrow and do some extra exercise to make up for the extra calories.
Guilty and ashamed. You want to hide the evidence – and yourself.

  5. You're feeling bored and restless. There's nothing on TV and you don't feel like doing any of the chores you know you should be doing. What do you do instead?

Channel surf, phone a friend, flick through a magazine, or browse the Internet.
Exercise. Go for a walk or jog, put on an exercise video, or go to a gym class.
    Start snacking.

  6. There is a lot of pressure on you at work and you are having trouble making a decision about a key issue. What do you do?

Work on something else, you'll deal with that issue later.
Write down your options and come to a decision based on the pros and cons of each.
Go out to get a Frappuccino and a donut. Eating will calm your nerves so you can make a decision.

  7. Your partner has been doing a lot of overtime lately, so you've been holding up the fort at home – preparing meals, doing the laundry, picking up the kids – when normally the two of you would share the chores. When your partner gets home, he or she doesn’t even seem to notice your extra efforts. What do you do?

Act the martyr and continue doing your chores in silence.
Tell your partner that you are feeling unappreciated and that a "thank you" would be nice.
Dig into your secret stash of junk food.
