HISTORY

The early 1970s gave birth to many diet programs. In fact, the low-carb craze of the late 1990s was born in the seventies. Yet even then, while others were experimenting with diets and tinkering with alternative weight loss methods, Allan Borushek, health educator and clinical dietitian, was focused on a more balanced and scientific approach based on total calorie moderation. Because of the lack of reliable nutrition data for many popular foods, he began to collect his own data. He subsequently published his first Calorie, Fat, & Carb Counter in Australia in 1973. In 1988, The Doctor's Pocket Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter (CFCC) was published in the United States. Since then more than 10,000,000 copies have been sold.

For more than 30 years Allan has focused on collecting and presenting accurate nutrition information in a format that has made the CFCC the most recognized book of calorie, fat and carbohydrate counts in America, and a perennial USA Today best-seller. Allan continues to update the CFCC and publishes a new edition each year.

The CalorieKing brand was born in 1996 with the launch of CalorieKing.com. As Allan put it, "Modern database technology and the worldwide web provided the means to build and present a much larger food database than could reasonably be included in a useful and handy book. CalorieKing.com made the introduction of brand foods easier and offered a reasonable means to deliver updated information when food companies change their recipe or drop a product." The CalorieKing food database now includes nearly 55,000 foods. CalorieKing.com also provides a platform for additional valuable nutrition and health information and tools, as well as the means to allow calorie-conscious individuals to exchange successful weight management techniques. Allan adds, "Individuals on any diet whatsoever can use CalorieKing.com to learn how to handle everyday situations that diets simply do not address."

In 2003, CalorieKing University (now the CalorieKing Program), a comprehensive course on nutrition, weight management, and lifestyle change was added to the CalorieKing site, making CalorieKing Club the first online weight management club to place calorie-education and food awareness at the center of its program. CalorieKing University was renovated in 2006 to make it the perfect adjunct to any clinical or commercial weight-loss program or weight-focused employee wellness initiative. Also in 2006, the CFCC was released with a new name, The CalorieKing Calorie, Fat and Carb Counter.

In 2004, CalorieKing released the Nutrition and Exercise Manager, desktop software for PC or Mac. We believe it is the best desktop solution in the market and back up this claim with a try-it-before-you-buy-it invitation. We also offer the software in a fundraiser format for schools interested in a healthy alternative to door-to-door sales of cookie dough and candy.

For 2007, CalorieKing's browser tool, like a Google browser tool but for foods, is available to health plans and employers seeking to bridge the gap between weight loss and lifelong weight control by promoting daily food awareness. Ask your health plan or employer about it, or have your workplace health-promotion manager give us a call.

As individuals, employers, and health plans recognize food awareness as essential to lifelong weight control, CalorieKing's opportunity to make a difference has grown. CalorieKing will continue to offer tools and solutions designed to help individuals increase their food awareness over time and make better food choices.

To bridge the void between a "diet" and lifelong weight control, think food awareness; think CalorieKing.
